The university and the Jordanian Center for Civic Education Studies discussed the possibility of training Hashemite University students on civic education skills that the center offers and that aim at refining the students' personalities, promoting their civic awareness and focusing their inclination to serve their local communities and to participate in voluntary activities. The aim of the university is to graduate students who are aware of their rights and responsibilities and the rights and responsibilities of others. The civic education program includes training on the different stages of solving problems on campus or in the local community.

In his meeting with Mrs. Mona Al Alami, the executive director of the center, Dr. Suleiman Arabiyyat, the university president affirmed that the university's services to its students are based on the vision of His Majesty King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein and his care for the youth. His Majesty has placed the youth and the establishment of youth institutions on his agenda of priorities; he has provided them with the elements of success, has launched youth initiatives and has given them his directions during the frequent meetings that he had with them. The president pointed out the role played by the Deanship of Student Affairs in caring for youth and offering them various programs and activities.

He emphasized the importance of student participation in voluntary activities on campus and in the local community adding that it is important to arm students with knowledge and skills, enhance their sense of belonging, strengthen their feeling of citizenship and prepare them to play an active role in the political, economic and social life and take decisions freely and responsibly.

He said that the university approves all activities that strengthen the talents and abilities of the students in order to meet the challenges they face in their university and practical life. He added that the program seeks to deepen the values of loyalty and political participation among the students, free them from all forms of intolerance, instill in them the values of tolerance and justice and strengthen their relationship with their local community.

Mrs. Mona Al Alami, on her part, pointed to a number of success stories achieved by the center in its programs that were implemented in a number of Jordanian universities, where hundreds of students were trained.  http://www.hu.edu.jo 


Fifteen students from Syria and Jordan participated in a week long training camp on media and civic education in Amman.

Organized by the Jordanian Center for Civic Education Studies, the workshop provided student with hands-on training on news reporting, investigative writing and analysis as well as new media, crisis management, leadership and citizenship.

The camp which kicked off Saturday November.14 -2009 and concluded November. 20 -2009 is one of a series of workshops that brought dozens of students from Syria, Jordan and Egypt together to improve their writing and working skills and introduce them to the world of media.

Dr. Nabil Al Sharif, the Minister of State for Media Affairs and Communications, presented the students with certificates and prizes and delivered a small speech in which he called on all students to be the tool of change in the Arab world.

“While reading the workshop’s agenda, we come across an important aspect, its focus on youth who are the hope of this nation and are an important factor in the building and prosperity process,” said the minister.

“Our hope for change lies on the youth of this nation… a change that achieves development and is associated with technology,” added Dr. Al Sharif while calling on the participants to care for community development issues and the wellbeing of Arab citizens.  

During the event, students were divided into five groups, each of which worked on a project related to the topics addressed at the workshop. Two groups worked on TV shows, another group on a radio show and the rest wrote newspaper reports. They were also taken on site visits to Reuters News Agency, al Sijjil political magazine, Farah Al Nas Radio Station and The Jordan Times English Newspaper.

Most students said they benefited a great deal from the topics addressed in the training camp and called for similar events in the region.

“We were amazed at the performance of the civic education trainers who interacted with us and went beyond the rigid and academic frame that we are used to,” said one student. “ We definitely need more such workshops that address topics that are of great importance to us and our work in the future.”
