Youth for Change

The relationship between media and civic education is a strong and profound one, represented in the reflection of the foundations of civic education on the ethics and behavior of media professionals. Civic Education is one of the factors that contribute to the search for truth and dealing with news credibility.

From this point comes the production of the manual "Youth for Change: Media and Civic Education" which aims at creating a generation of promising young media students in the Arab universities. The manual seeks to define the key terms in both fields and to introduce human rights and the rights of journalists. It sheds the light on the culture of democracy, introduces the basics of media writing with all its varying types ranging from the article to the press report to the investigative report; and points out the similarities and differences between these types. Moreover, it sharpens the skills of students by providing them with the cognitive tools needed for working on a project such as leadership, time management and conflict resolution skills. It also aims at encouraging students to participate in community service activities.

Project Citizen

Project Citizen introduces students to and educates them in the methods and procedures used in our political process. The goal of the program is to develop students' commitment to active citizenship and governance by:

  • Providing the knowledge and skills required for effective participation.
  • Providing practical experience designed to foster a sense of competence and efficacy.
  • Developing and understanding of the importance of citizen participation.

Foundations of Democracy

In studying Foundations of Democracy, students develop the ability to identify issues that require social action.

They are encouraged through informed inquiry to make a personal commitment to accept responsibilities associated with the rights we enjoy as citizens, 'responsibilities' essential to the continued existence of a society based on the ideas of justice, equality, freedom, and human rights.

The curriculum is organized around four concepts:

  • Authority,

  • Privacy,

  • Responsibility,

  • Justice.

The curriculum is designed to:

  • Promote and increased understanding of the institutions and values upon which they were founded.

  • Develop the skills needed by young people to become effective and responsible citizens.

  • Increase understanding and willingness to use democratic processes when making decisions and managing conflict, both in public and private life.
